Rode an RT-P and R1100S

I had the chance to ride two BMW motorcycles while on vacation - an R1100RT-P and an R1100S. This was the first time I'd ridden either one of these bikes. Both are fantastic machines. I would happily ride either of these to Alaska, Mexico, or some other far-flung adventure destination.

Below is the R1100RT-P. The RT-P is BMW's police model (see here bike for more info on the RT-P).

Those Pia lights on the front make it look like a battle cruiser when you light them up. The bike is tricked out with much electronic gadgetry too. GPS, cell holders, map light, intercom system. If I had owned this bike, I'd get a black and white helmet and a reflective safety vest to ride around in. People just jump out of your way when they see you coming.

The R1100S is one sweet bike. I got the front wheel off the ground. Not used to that on a BMW! I also smoked the clutch a little (sorry Mark...). Stupid dry clutch. If I hadn't just bought an R1150RT, I'd go out and get one of these. Can't see in the picture, but it's got Pia's, hyperlites, etc..

Riding R1100S to Far-Flung Places

The R1100S pictured above happens to be my personal ride. As much as I absolutely love this machine I'd be hard pressed to ride it to "Alaska, Mexico, or some other far-flung adventure destination" as Paul writes. Maybe I'm just a softy but a few hours in the saddle really starts to wear on your rear! 400 miles is the most I've done in a day. Anyway, if you are looking for a long distance tourer stick with the RT (Paul's bike) or the RT-P like the one pictured above. Oh yeah, and the clutch seams to have made a full recovery!

An aftermarket seat such as a sargent or corbin is a must. Much better improvement over the stocker.

I bought and tried the Sargent, found it just as painful as the stock seat only spread out more. Returned the Sargent. Now using a sheepskin pad that is very comfy.

I have a Corbin saddle on mine. Makes a world of difference for both me and my passenger. Keeps my rear happy for much longer than the stock saddle.
